About Bronzeville

History of Bronzeville

In the first half of the 20th Century, Bronzeville became a vibrant “city within a city” providing housing, economic opportunities, and entertainment to Blacks who were prevented from accessing other parts of Chicago by restrictive housing covenants and other racially-motivated policies and regulations. By 1950, Bronzeville was the center of Black Chicago and, along with Harlem, NY, the economic and cultural capital of Black America. It was one of the most economically integrated, culturally rich, and socially exciting communities in the United States; and, it served as a key gateway for African Americans immigrating from the South seeking opportunities in broader America and for Americans of all backgrounds seeking the best of black culture and community.

With the Civil Rights movement and the dismantling of segregation beginning in the 1950s, many African American families left Bronzeville, which had become overcrowded. As a result, Bronzeville’s population declined by more than 75 percent between 1950 and 2000 and much of the community’s economic base was lost.

In 2008 the Bronzeville Alliance formed as a group of Bronzeville Residents and organizations committed to the economic, social and cultural redevelopment of the historic community commonly and affectionately known as Bronzeville. The Alliance brings together a variety of stakeholders to develop coordinated strategies addressing five key issue areas: crime and grime; education and training; green jobs, health, and the environment; housing; and retail, hospitality, tourism, and transportation. Recognizing the need for targeted, strategic retail recruitment and retention, the Alliance created the Bronzeville Retail Initiative (BRI) in 2009.

As part of our initiative, we are compiling an extensive list of businesses in the Bronzeville community to make it easier for residents and visitors to shop local.

We aspire to a Bronzeville that is a vibrant, diverse, intergenerational, mixed income community that is locally owned and controlled and whose residents reflect the historic African American heritage and share values and a sense of history that allow the community to be sustained. This is the promise of Bronzeville.

Today, Bronzeville is rebounding, driven by the return of professional African Americans who are investing in rehabilitating homes alone the still-gracious avenues of the community, by working class African Americans who remained in the community through high and low times, and by a diverse mix of other residents and stakeholders. As a result of this, a tremendous level of real estate and retail opportunity exists in Bronzeville through a wide variety of available lots.

In Summer 2013, we will be launching a comprehensive database of these available lots to help businesses easily identify potential locations for business expansion into Bronzeville.
